Democratic Services Officers provide an essential function at the heart of local government. Those individuals involved professionally in Democratic Services manage core council functions and support elected members in both their traditional and emerging roles in order to meet community needs and priorities.
Individuals work across the key areas of:
- Meetings Support
- Member Support
- Overview and Scrutiny
- Civic Support
- Community Governance
Staff within Democratic Services can work within a particular specialism or undertake duties from across the key areas. Individuals require high standards of communication, adaptability, sound legislative knowledge and are renowned for going the extra mile to support elected members and senior council officers in undertaking their duties. Democratic Services Officers can also be involved in providing support for wider council duties such as citizenship in schools or in organisation of elections. The profession provides variety for individuals, daily challenges and an opportunity to learn about local authority functions from their democratic core.
The development of new Democratic Qualifications will provide individuals with the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills at a variety of levels within the profession.
