Public sector workers to pay more and retire later
Six million public sector workers are to lose their final salary pension schemes and will have to work for up to six years longer under plans to ease the state's £30bn pensions liability. A government-commissioned report by Lord Hutton, the former Labour pensions secretary, proposes sweeping changes to state pensions that will mean nurses, doctors, teachers, local government and other public sector workers will have to pay more into their pension pots, retire later and many will receive less when they do.... The recent case of Thorpe v Fellowes Solicitors LLP [2011] EWHC 61 (QB) illustrates the care solicitors should exercise when seeing elderly clients. Ensuring they can correctly identify issues relating to mental capacity and where a client is no longer able to sufficiently understand. Mrs Justice Sharp said, “A solicitor is generally only required to make inquiries as to a person's capacity to contract if there are circumstances such as to raise doubt as to this in the mind of a reasonably competent practitioner.”...
